Szórakaténusz Toy Museum and Workshop

Where toys come to life

Service
Toy exhibition, museum educational services, family programs
DESCRIPTION

The institution was opened to the public on December 4, 1981. The workshop and museum with a double objective was named based on the verse of an ancient nursery rhyme. The frame for all this was given by a building dedicated for this purpose, the central space of which was inspired by the yurt of the conquering Hungarians.

In the museum children can experience the liberating joy of play, while adults have the opportunity to rediscover and relive the cherished moments of their childhood.

The permanent exhibition offers visitors a glimpse into the world of middle-class toys from the turn of the 20th century, showcasing model railways, stone building sets, dollhouses, porcelain dolls, and paper toys. The exhibition presents Hungarian artistic toys from the early decades of the 20th century, the magic props of Rodolfo, the world-famous magician, vintage children’s books, and the iconic tinplate toys of the 1960s and 1970s.

The folk toy collection takes visitors on a journey from ancient clay and bone toys to the traditional toys of Europe, Asia, and Central America.

At scheduled times throughout the year, the Aprók Tánca and Antanténusz Workshop programmes offer engaging recreational activities for the whole family. In addition, the museum hosts the annual Szóraka Festival, a celebration of play, on the first Saturday of September each year.
