Felsőlajos is located on the northern edge of Bács-Kiskun County, in the sandy ridge region of Kiskunság, 20 km northwest of Kecskemét.
During the 20th century, the settlement became known for its railway stop and rural farm schools. The original population of the surrounding farmsteads consisted of Cumans and Jász people who had settled here from Jászberény, although the composition of the population changed considerably over the decades.
The shifting sandy soil of the area, known locally as “posza homok”, provided only a modest livelihood for the families living here. Livestock farming played an important role, and the memory of the former communal pasture is still preserved in the name “Közös” (“Common”), an inhabited outlying area of the village.
In the central part of the settlement, on the land known as “Besenyi föld”, a group of terraced houses was built and became known as “Pucok falu” (“Vole Village”). The name originated from the way these houses rose above the flat landscape of the puszta, resembling the small mounds made by voles.
This area became the nucleus of the present-day community.
